During the Fifth International Mycological Congress held in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, 14-21 August 1994, two afternoon sessions were organized on the biology of heterobasidiomycetous fungi. The organizers of this contributed symposium invited speakers to present lectures on topics as diverse as general biology, systematics, molecular phylogeny, ultrastructure, and medical and applied aspects. In the lectures a considerable progress was demonstrated in all areas. Although we are aware that we missed important aspect on the biology of these organisms, we hope that this Contributed Symposium fulfilled the expectations of both visitors and speakers, and stimulated ongoing research.
