With the death of Dr J. A. von Arx the mycological community and, in particular, the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures has lost an eminent ex-pert in the taxonomy of microfungi. The institute has decided to dedicate a special issue of its publication series to his memory.
The editors are grateful to the invited contributors for their enthusiastic collaboration in this project. They also wish to thank Mrs C. J. van den Berg-Visser for accurate secretarial work and Dr Sheila M. Francis for correcting some of the English texts. Mr T. Hoek is acknowledged for his constant care in having the material printed.
